Why We Don’t Show Up: Responsibility in the Digital World

24/10/2024

Recently, I found myself in a situation where people just didn't show up, whether at an event or in business, even though they had committed to being there! It left me wondering, why do we behave like this? Have you ever agreed to meet someone, only for them not to show up when the time comes? Or maybe you've made agreements with someone, but they didn't show up without saying anything, leaving you wondering if it's your fault, or if this is just how people behave in the digital world now.

It feels like, in today's digital age, ignoring commitments is becoming the norm. People sign up for events, make promises, or agree to plans, but when it comes down to it, they don't show up. What's worse, they don't even bother to say they won't be coming. It's as if they think, "Why bother saying I'm not coming? That's too much effort." Or maybe they just don't want to seem rude.

This made me reflect on responsibility, especially when I remember what I learned during my MBA course at EU Business School of Barcelona. One concept that really stuck with me was the Triple Bottom Line, the idea that businesses should focus on three key areas: people, planet, and profit. It's a powerful idea, and we talk about it all the time in theory. But in practice, it seems different. Just like how people might talk about minimalism but still buy way too many things, we all know about sustainability, but how many of us really treat it seriously? We hear about it, but then we keep focusing on profit, while forgetting about people and the planet.

This focus on profit over everything else is creating a kind of irresponsibility that's creeping into our lives, both online and offline. In business, in our relationships, and in how we interact with the world, we're losing sight of what really matters. There's too much going on in the digital world, too much information coming at us all the time. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, and in all that chaos, people are becoming more irresponsible, distracted by everything around them.

But at the end of the day, responsibility is about more than just showing up. It's about following through and caring for more than just profit. We need to remind ourselves to focus on people and the planet. The digital world may be overwhelming, but that's no excuse for forgetting what really matters. Whether online or in person, being responsible means taking the time to do what's right, even when it's easier to ignore it.

So, where do these invisible commitments lead us? How can we bring back responsibility in a world that seems to be forgetting it?
