From Spain to France: The Hidden Wonders of Tap Water

10/11/2024

My recent journey from Spain to France brought a series of delightful discoveries—among them, the surprising pleasure of French tap water and an unforgettable glass of Bordeaux.

Our adventure began in Perpignan, a couple of hours past the border, where we stopped for pizza at a cozy café. As we waited for our meal, a large jug of water was placed on our table, though we hadn't ordered anything to drink. Looking around, I noticed similar jugs on every table. Curious, I asked the waitress about it. She explained that it's common in France to serve tap water, especially if you don't order a drink. It was refreshing to see something so simple being offered so openly.

Our next stop was Carcassonne, a town with a medieval heart and a historic old town. At our hotel, I asked the receptionist about bottled water, only to be met with a surprised look. "Bottled water? No need! Tap water is all you need here," he assured me, explaining that he and his family have been drinking it for generations. While part of me was hesitant, this glimpse into French culture was fascinating.

We continued our journey to Toulouse, the "Blue Gold" city known for its red roofs and architecture, as well as lively squares. After a full day of exploring, we settled into a charming café on the square. As I sipped my long-awaited glass of Bordeaux, I found myself savoring one of the best wines I'd ever tasted—rich, smooth, and full of flavor. It was a perfect companion to the evening, blending beautifully with the warmth of the atmosphere and the essence of French culture. We shared a pizza, and each portion was served with a side salad—such a nice touch!

And then, the familiar jug of water arrived at our table. By now, I was too intrigued to resist. I poured myself a glass and finally took a sip. To my surprise, it was just as everyone had said—clean, crisp, and as refreshing as it looked. Suddenly, the French love for tap water made perfect sense, especially alongside the elegance of Bordeaux.

So, if you ever find yourself traveling through France, don't hesitate to embrace the tap water and, of course, a glass of Bordeaux. Sometimes, it's the simplest things that leave the biggest impression.
